Experimental Drug Study - Tufts Medical Center
Heart attacks occur as a result of obstructed blood flow through the arteries supplying the hart muscle. Permanent damage or death to the heart muscle is a direct result of this blockage. Whether or not a given area of heart muscle will continue to function after a heart attack depends on how much of the muscle is damaged or dies before medical treatment is obtained.
The IMMEDIATE Trial is a study of a potentially important, inexpensive, and effective combination of medicines for heart attack patients. The IMMEDIATE Trial is testing whether early intervention of intravenous (IV) Glucose, Insulin and Potassium (GIK) can help save the lives of patients having heart attack symptoms. Studies have shown that immediate GIK treatment can protect portions of the heart muscle that are not receiving sufficient blood flow and can minimize heart muscle damage that might otherwise lead to death or to long-term heart failure.
The Center for Cardiovascular Health Services Research, Institute for Clinical Research and Health Policy Studies at Tufts-New England Medical Center asked IPS to assist in selection and enrollment of ambulances and fire rescue agencies for participation in the IMMEDIATE Trial.
