Mic Gunderson, President
Mic Gunderson began his EMS career in the 70's as a military medic, later becoming a civilian paramedic and firefighter. His days off from the field provided the opportunity to work in a laboratory at a medical school where he got involved in oxygen transport physiology and resuscitation research and spurred his interest in using research methods and design principles to improve systems and processes.
Mic started the first peer-reviewed journal for the EMS industry in the late 80's, called the Tampa Bay EMS Journal, which quickly expanded to become a national publication called the Journal of Prehospital Medicine. It soon merged in a combined efforts between World Association for Emergency and Disaster Medicine and the National Association of EMS Physicians to create a journal still in publication today called Prehospital & Disaster Medicine. More recently, he served as one the editors for the NAEMSP textbook, Medical Oversight of EMS, which was released in January '09.
Over the years, Mic has served on the boards of directors national professional associations. His work has been extensively published and he has presented his work and innovative concepts in lectures at conferences in the U.S. and abroad. In addition to serving as President of IPS, Mic is an online adjunct faculty member for the Masters in Emergency Health Service Program and at University of Maryland—Baltimore County.
